From Rice to NYC to the Southwest

I first met Karolyn in 1967, when we both were freshmen at Rice University. She stood out in our cohort for her political acumen and her courage. There was a lot going on at Rice (as elsewhere) in the late 1960's, and Karolyn was a fearless activist. I was always a little intimidated by her, even though she was always kind to me. She made me feel frivolous...which I suppose I was. I re-connected with Karolyn in the late 1970's and early 1980's in NYC...around the time that she met Peter, the love of her life. I lived in the West Village and she and Peter lived in the East Village...and we shared some good meals and good times together. We were even in a small reading group together for a while...reading Hegel's Phenomenology of Mind. I always learned a lot from Karolyn, and began to feel somewhat less frivolous around her. Finally, we both ended up in the southwestern U.S. for the last couple of decades...although we pretty much lost touch in the last few years. I knew of he passion for native seeds and plants. amd respected it. Karolyn was an amazing and admirable woman...I will never forget her and am sorry that her life story ended earlier than it should have.
