From Rice to DC to Savannah

I was in Brown Dorm at Rice with Karolyn, and shared many of her political views during that turbulent time. I guess you could say we were on the front lines together. I also remember being in some classes with her and appreciating her fine mind and her fearlessness. I was the reverse, often afraid to speak out around authority, so I secretly delighted in her frankness and her inability to suffer fools gladly! We lived together off-campus with some others in an old house. Then I dropped out of Rice and moved back to Arlington, Virginia, where I am from. I was living there, working, and finishing up my B.A. Degree at George Washington University, when Karolyn showed up living in Falls Church. It was great being in the same area, and our friendship developed further. I remember at some time she and Sara came to see me and followed my instructions to take the city bus to the textile museum, and ended up in a completely wrong part of town -- something to joke about in the future. We were out of touch, except through Sara, for many years. My life unfolded, and I eventually ended up in the Asheville, NC area. I also, late in life, decided I would do what I always had wanted to do -- teach math and science. We got together for a few days in Savannah with Sara, which were a blast. How glad I am that we got to reconnect! As I read the other stories of Karolyn, I am struck by her love of science and nature. My daughter, Ruthie, is majoring in Ecology at UNC Asheville and has become adept at (and passionate about) identifying native plants and helping me eradicate invasive species from our yard. I will tell her more about Karolyn's work -- now that I know more about it. I wish I'd been able to introduce them to one another. Karolyn sent me four heavy boxes of science education materials. I am waiting to open them until I have some uninterrupted time to really assess them and figure out where they would do the most good. Going through these will be a chance to catch up on all that Karolyn has done, and I look forward to it as an at-least-partially mystical experience (the part that isn't just a lot of hard work.) I will be at the memorial service July 6th, and looking forward to meeting all of Karolyn's old and newer friends, some for a second time and others for the first time.
