Karolyn was the consummate teacher...

Karolyn was the consummate teacher. Like Katie and others, I worked with Karolyn at the Downtown Campus of Pima College. When I moved to Northwest Campus, I was lucky enough to get her to teach with me there as well, where she received an outstanding teacher award. The college students loved her – she was passionate about all aspects of biology, and her love for the subject was infectious. She could take non-majors environmental biology students (who took the class because they thought it was the easiest lab science course to take) and turn them into ecologists and environmentalists. It was during this time that I discovered that she taught more than just college. As an author for Scholastic and other publishers, she wrote about science for all grade levels. When you pick up and read an elementary school science supplement, or even a teacher’s guide for “The Magic School Bus,” you can hear her enthusiasm for science – as if she was speaking directly to you. I also realized during this time just how many people knew and loved Karolyn from all the organizations in which she was involved. And everyone in all of those organizations would agree – Karolyn was always teaching. She taught us about ecology, history, philosophy, and psychology. And she always had the best stories – stories from her life with Peter, and from their travels around the world. Karolyn, you left way too early, and we will all miss you so much. But you lived well, accomplished so much, and made the world a better place. You are an inspiration to all of us to be our best, to care, to get involved, and to make a difference. -- Mike
