It's many years past her passing now, but I was one of Karolyn's earth semester students in Oracle, AZ and I appreciated the privilege of being her student. She loved Ursula K Le Guin, if my memory serves me correctly, and hearing her talk about some of UKLG's other work, such as the novel The Left Hand of Darkness, while the class was reading Always Coming Home, led me to read that book and many others of Ursula's books, which I have loved totally beyond all reason. In the twenty-teens we lost both Karolyn and Ursula, but I like to think I "knew what they meant" without arrogance - I think they had the same kind of amazing and revolutionary type of mind - and I will now look forward to reading Karolyn's books and pursuing the path of writing somehow myself because it is time.

Throughout our friendship of 45 years, Karolyn showed me what it means to be brave and kind. And witty and bossy. All of the traits of a strong, brilliant woman. She lives on in my life and the lives of so many people she encountered.

I am so lucky to have crossed paths with amazing Karolyn in my life, and very sad that she is gone. The Arizona Native Plant Society will will miss her insights, company, and no-bullshit spirit.
